Connecting YourMembership and SpecBuilder for MSS

When organizations introduce a specialized platform into their technology ecosystem, one of the biggest considerations is how that platform will communicate with the systems already in place. For Manufacturers Standardization Society (MSS), the implementation of SpecBuilder is about more than adding a new standards management tool, it requires creating a reliable connection between SpecBuilder and the organization’s existing YourMembership environment.

Working alongside AMS Geek, Data Sangria is helping build the integration layer that allows information and user access to move between these systems more efficiently.

Connecting SpecBuilder to the Existing Technology Ecosystem

MSS uses YourMembership as its association management system and authentication source, while SpecBuilder will provide a dedicated environment for managing standards-related work. Rather than treating the two platforms as isolated systems, the implementation connects them so that existing member information and authentication processes can support the SpecBuilder experience. The technical solution has two primary components: Single Sign-On (SSO) and automated data synchronization.

Creating a Seamless Login Experience with SSO

To simplify authentication, AMS Geek is implementing SSO middleware that will act as a SAML Identity Providerbetween MSS’s existing environment and SpecBuilder.

The integration uses an SP-initiated SAML 2.0 authentication flow. When a user attempts to access SpecBuilder, the authentication process connects back through the SSO infrastructure, allowing the user’s existing identity to be used rather than requiring an entirely separate authentication process.

The signed SAML assertion passes the information SpecBuilder needs to identify the user, including:

  • Email address as the NameID
  • First name
  • Last name
  • Email address

This creates a more seamless experience for users while establishing a structured and secure method for exchanging identity information between platforms.

Automating Data Between YourMembership and SpecBuilder

Authentication is only one side of the integration. Data Sangria is also supporting a one-way synchronization from YourMembership into SpecBuilder. Selected committees and task groups within YourMembership can be synchronized with SpecBuilder so that the appropriate users and access relationships are reflected in the standards management platform.

Instead of relying on staff to manually maintain the same information in multiple systems, the integration can support processes such as user provisioning, adding access when appropriate, and removing access when a user’s underlying committee or task-group relationship changes. The synchronization can run on a scheduled basis, such as hourly or daily, allowing SpecBuilder to stay aligned with the information maintained in YourMembership.

Reducing Duplicate Data Management

From a data perspective, one of the most important aspects of this architecture is establishing a clear direction of information flow. YourMembership remains the source for the selected member and group information being passed into SpecBuilder. SpecBuilder can then use that information to provide the specialized functionality MSS needs without requiring staff to independently maintain the same relationships in both platforms.

That distinction matters. Integrations aren’t simply about moving data from System A to System B yet they’re about defining which system owns the data, where that data needs to go, and what should happen when the source data changes. For MSS, the result is an environment where authentication, user provisioning, group relationships, and platform access can work together rather than becoming separate administrative processes.

Building the Connections Behind Better Experiences

Specialized technology can provide organizations with powerful new capabilities, but its value increases when it fits naturally into the broader technology ecosystem. By connecting YourMembership and SpecBuilder through SSO and automated data synchronization, MSS is building an infrastructure designed to reduce duplicate administration while giving users a more connected experience. For Data Sangria, this project represents what thoughtful integration is all about: making sure the right data reaches the right system at the right time—and putting that data to work once it gets there.
